Safe Exercise Tips for Summer Heat
Something about summertime makes you wanna get up and get out and get active. The thing is, you may notice some common issues caused by the summer heat and humidity making your daily workout harder. Taking precautions to prevent excess fatigue, dehydration, and heat injury will keep you up and going for a safe and happy while you exercise this summer.
Rehydrate after working out.
Summer heat forces your body to sweat more. If you do not make an effort to replace lost fluids you will have to deal with the effects and risks of dehydration. Check the heat index.
Avoid working out during peak heat that can leave you feeling run down faster than normal. High heat indexes put you at higher risk of heatstroke, and dehydration. Even when you are not being hit by a heat wave, you will notice that peak hours between 11 and 2 are not the best time for safe summer exercise outdoors. If you need to sneak a workout in during this time, look for an indoor or water activity. Early morning and late evening are ideal.
Dress for safe summer exercise.
Lightweight clothing that wicks moisture away from your body to keep you cool is vital to keeping healthy while working out in the heat. Look for clothing options that breathe, but offer UV protection. Stick to light colors that will not absorb the sun's heat.
Pile on the sunscreen.
An outdoor game of basketball or a day of swimming laps in the pool are great summer exercise but there is nothing good about the pain that comes from a sunburn. Sunscreen is the best way to protect your skin from sun damage. Be sure to reapply regularly while you are working out. For best results apply at least 30 minutes before you head outside to allow it to soak into your skin. When you come in, rehydrate your skin with a hydrating lotion.
