Reinforce Learning Using "Read with Phonics"
This post is sponsored by Read with Phonics. I was given access to the app to facilitate a review, but all opinions are my own.
As a mom and teacher, I am all too familiar with the "summer slide" kids tend to experience over the long break between school years. After all of the hard work they have put in learning and growing during the many months of school, it is a shame to just let that disappear. This is why I like to continue learning experiences and review throughout the summer.
Though we can be tempted to drop our routines and just have fun during those warm summer months, it is important to reinforce and continue some things. Setting aside an amount of time each day for learning is crucial. We use games, apps, the computer, and everyday adventures to do this and still keep it fun.
Read with Phonics
We were recently given the opportunity to review a new learning app called Read with Phonics. The goal of this app is to teach all the phonics sounds in a fun and interactive way. It offers a series of 7 or 8 games that get progressively harder each time. Children can explore the 4 worlds of the program with Albee the alien, the main character:
- Water World
- Forest World
- Lava Land
- Jelly City

Scoring:
The creator of this app is also a teacher, who strongly believes in positive scoring. Traditionally a student is measured out of 100%, and therefore is always shown how far off the perfect score they were. They call this negative scoring. At Read with Phonics, every student starts at 0, and gains points for each correct answer. This means that success leads to more success and as the points add up, students improve their level.
When children learn a sound, they unlock a new sound, which encourages children to keep going. By having their own account and score, children are able to learn at their own pace and in their own time, depending on their level and ability.

Cost and Details:
I especially love that you don't have to have an internet connection to use the app. You also don't have to deal with bothersome and distracting ads. For a one time fee of just $7.99, you can unlock all 4 levels and you don't have to pay a yearly subscription. You can allow your children to use it without worrying that they will make a in-app purchases without your consent.
